Cole, State of Play

The purpose of the media, as we discussed in Good Night and Good Luck, is to report true events, true facts. In our society today, although many aspects of the media do their best to give the truth, they tend to give us what will keep our interest instead of what we ought to know. Politicians in particular are a great example of this, as we hold them to higher moral standards and they control our government. The media is a politician’s worst and best friend. They provide information to the public that could make or break their careers. The media and political world rely on each other to fuel their careers, at the cost of the other at times. Although it seems like the media has complete power in what they share with the public, we can see in State of Play that the press is not always entirely free, per say. For example, in the film new owners who do not necessarily want to portray the most informative story (but rather the most sensationalized) have recently bought out the Washington Globe. Because of this, there is a lot of pressure on Cal and Della to settle for a mediocre, even useless, story. Also, many media outlets incorporate their own political ideologies into their programs whether right or left winged. They do this simply because they can. When reading about politics then, the public must wonder whether or not they are getting the entire truth from the so-called, “truth seekers”.

  1. The media should report events clearly and with as little slant as possible. But is should also speak out against injustice. Your point about Cal and Della is good. Cameron wants a juicy story, not an in-depth investigation because she simply wants to sell papers.
