Rendition Post - Phoebe Keegan

When I think about the issue of torture being either right or wrong, my head gets all muddled. On one hand, it is wrong and morally irresponsible on many a level. On the other, there is a chance that that it could save lives. I think that the underlying issue is that torture would be reasonable in extreme cases if it were proven to work. Studies show that under extreme duress, people will say almost anything, even implicate themselves if they are innocent and supply false facts, to make it stop. This adds another question, with all the false information gathered by torture, how can one tell what is true and what is false? Torture may even hinder investigations because when the CIA or whoever follows leads on faulty information, they are wasting valuable time and resources on information that someone in extreme pain made up just so the pain will stop if only temporarily. I think that torture would only work in extremely ideal situations in an ideal world where no one lied, but sine we don’t, torture should not be used as an effective tool for getting information out of someone.
