Dupuis State of Play

Americans in general seem to only enjoy sensational news. If a news agency were to print a breakdown of the PATRIOT Act, they would find that their readership would decline for that printing. On the other hand, if the same news agency printed a story about a senators sordid affair in a sleazy hotel room, the papers would fly off the presses. Part of the issue with these two stories is that actual news that affects us (in relation to politics) is a rather dry read and contains words or phrases that can only be understood by people familiar with politics. The style of writing used by the government is designed that was to keep everyone in the dark. This writing is in the same style that keeps lawyers employed. Shocking news articles contain small words with easy to understand imagery which reaches to the biggest most ignorant audience.
Since Americans pay for what they enjoy and reject what matters to them, news agencies that chase profit will gladly provide select articles to appease this desire. Even though journalists are supposed to be another check and balance in a democratically elected government, they are now relegated to a voyeuristic reality-tv like mouthpiece.

The scene where the editor yells at Cal for not running with the sex story about how Collins paid off 40k in credit debt proves this point. Cam is more interested in dollars than she is in sense. Since we live in a capitalist country that cherishes money over God, money over life, this is an entirely logical decision on her part. Once upon a time journalists reported news and Americans bought it. As this nation gets older, the populous gets even more base and childish. We can track the decline of this nation by the way its citizens react to restrictions in freedoms and in the news we find valuable. There was a time where what Clinton did would not have made it in the news, since it wasn't really considered news. What Americans would have wanted to know about is what he is doing to run the country.

  1. Good choice of scenes. Your last statement is important We should want to know what our politicians are doing. So much is misreported, or it takes place in secret.
