Knoepfler, H&K get outa G-Bay

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay is undoubtedly not your typical “teen bong film.” Yes, it is funny, and has a lot of marijuana, sex, and crude humor, but it also carries other messages. I like to think of these humors as a carrier for the deeper message of political corruption and stupidity. Would America’s youth go out and see and/or buy a bland movie with a political message about political corruption and stupidity? Probably not. It’s almost scary how subliminal these messages are in this film. I watched it with the perspective of, “Oh, cool. weed,” without even thinking about the political aspects of the film. When it was over, however, I had changed my perspective and thought of how much the government is really cramping our style. I’m not accusing this movie of trying to brainwash America’s youngins’ into becoming pot-smoking hippies who go on adventures with Neal Patrick Harris to whorehouses, but it is essentially doing just this. The movie definitely tries to deliver the message as an undertone to a comedy in a very clever way. To me, the message first conveys the racist bigotry of American foreign policy. An Asian man. A non-Muslim, but dark skinned man. Terrorists? Probably not. It sure as hell looks like it to homeland security however. Aside from the satire on American racism, the movie also touches on the country’s marijuana laws. It shows people smoking pot having fun, being normal and looking like healthy, good Americans. It’s trying to say that normal people do it too, and not just washed up druggies.
