The title of this movie refers to the U.S.’s policy (introduced by the Clinton administration, one line of dialogue points out) of “extraordinary rendition,” by which suspected terrorists can be moved to other countries to be tortured without legal restraints or ramifications. This is the cold hard truth that a lot of people either choose to ignore or sugar coat in order to rationalize our governments actions. International law prohibits the use of torture by any country on an individual, this does not exempt the United States. The government believes that if they use tiny technicalities to shroud their actions that their actions will be either excused or unknown all together. This is not the case at all. What we are doing is torturing people, sometimes innocent people to produce information that we want in order to further our campaigns on terror. Some will claim that we are torturing to save the lives of hundred or even thousands of individuals, but what makes us better than the terrorist if we too resort to terror in order to achieve our goals. If we are fighting to protect the ideals our country stands for it is nothing short of fatal to sacrifice these ideals in order to win the fight. We must reconsider what we currently hold as acceptable actions for our leaders to take. We must no longer hide in the shadows of fear as our country becomes what we believe it to war against.
