The movie Harold and Kumar escape from Guantanimo Bay is definitely made not as a piece of serious art, or as a statement, but as an appeal to young men. That is the main purpose of the movie, to make money off of teenagers by making them laugh. That being said, there are definitely some serious messages to be drawn from the movie, even if they are secondary to the crude humor.
The movie pokes fun at racial stereotypes, as well as the government. It attacks stereotypes by setting up expectations for different characters, and then completely doing the opposite of what was expected. In every case, this joke reveals that we were responsible for the assumptions we made about the characters, which were most often based on race.
The movie makes fun of the U.S. government by showing them as completely incompetent. They are seen as relying on ignorant racial stereotypes, as well as relying on very faulty information.
Both messages are very relevant to our society. So it is definitely worth considering them while watching the movie. However, like I said before, the movie's focus is definitely on making stupid jokes.
What about Homeland Security, could the film relate subliminal messages about the way it denies people their rights?
