Tricamo-Palmer-Rendition

I strongly believe that there is no circumstance in which torture is acceptable. It is obviously a terrible, inhumane thing to do to someone, but I don't think any one would disagree with that. Furthermore, it is said in our constitution that no one shall be subjected to cruel or unusual punishment, which seems a clear statement against torture. It has been seen, and is made dramatically clear in the movie Rendition, that torture leaves mental scars that cannot be healed.
Again, I think that everyone can agree to all that. The issue arises because many people believe that there are times when torture is nessecary. Times when not using torture would lead to much worse things. There is definitely a moral argument to be had here, about whether it is ever ok to do cruel things like torture to someone, whatever the circumstance. But the real thing to think about is a logical problem. That is, that torture doesn't work. It is been proven, and testified to by many people who have been involved in torture, that some one who is being tortured will say anything to make the torture stop.
So you can see that while the degree to which it is morally unacceptable is still up for debate, the idea that there are times when it can help is false. So there is really no reason to use torture, and seeing that we can all agree that it is a terrible thing to do to someone, it must end completely in our country.
