The media plays a very important role in today’s society. Not only does the media inform the people of what is going on in the world, it also gives people opinions based on what are sometime facts and sometimes not facts. State of Play and Good Night and Good Luck both touched on this point of how the media controls the people. There are too many times that a stories is broadcast in a slanted or skewed way to make the person on the other end seem like someone they are not. Politicians are very susceptible to this. The only connection people have with politicians is the media. Sarah Palin and the way she was slanted into a “stupid sex icon” is a very good example. Although there is “freedom of press” there seems to be lack thereof. One good example is the media not being able to show the coffins coming home from Iraq on television. In State of Play there is a scene where the Washington Globe is taken over by new owners. These new owners do not care about the investigation behind the stories but rather that the stories are filled with drama and controversy. They do not want the truth (so to say), they want what sells. In the movie Cal and Della are basically forced to tell useless stories, when all they want is time to investigate. In many cases even like these ones, the media tends to be left or right sided. This is where the controversy comes in and how the “free press” interacts with the government.
Nice, but you are not in class today. You should be.
