I think Heath Ledger and Jake Gyllenhaal took on other roles during the filming of Brokeback Mountain in order to reinforce their heterosexual image and dispel any rumors of being gay. Both took on considerably contrasting roles from the ones in Brokeback: Heath Ledger played a womanizer and Jake Gyllenhaal played a tough marine. I think these movies were specifically chosen and the actors, in fear of being labeled gay or in order to not be repeatedly casted in future films as the gay man, eagerly took on these roles contrasting their characters in Brokeback. The actors were not exatcly comfortable playing these roles based on their behavior including Heath Ledger's affair with Michelle Williams and Jake Gyllenhaal's repeated assertion that he wasn't gay.
