Rock Hudson was a 1960s male actor most notable for his romantic leads. He was considered to be extremely handsome and a male sex idol. He died in 1985 from an AIDS related death. Hudson was gay but could not come out of the closet because of ridicule from the media.
Heath Ledger was a straight male actor who was often portrayed as a male romantic lead, as seen in his simultaneously filmed 2005 Casanova. Gyllenhaal, also seen as a sex symbol, asserted often throughout the hype surrounding Brokeback Mountain that he was not gay. Although I do not believe that either actor is actually gay, I feel that their actions and interviews they gave surrounding Brokeback where done in an attempt to dispel any rumors that they might be gay. If either had been actually gay, many young girls would not believe that they could have sex with them and would not pay to see their movies.
