This all comes from a fear of homosexuality. No one wishes to be thought of something they are not, but this fear is different. Unlike the oppression of race, where it is impossible to deny what one is being persecuted for, homosexuality can not only be denied, but one may also accuse another of it without any prior evidence. It resembles the Salem Witch Hunts in which case one could merely state another was a witch, and even if the person accused could convince other he or she was not a witch, he or she would never be viewed or treated the same. This fear could have caused them to outwardly claim they were not homosexual and portray the roles of a member of the armed forces and a classical woman romantic.

Fear of Homosexuality
While filming Brokeback Mountain, Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger also starred in the films Jarhead (Gyllenhaal) and Casanova (Ledger). Many people have dismissed the idea of the two actors intentionally choosing masculine roles to counter act the homosexual ones, but how much of coincidence could this be. While they may have not intentionally done so, an unconscious drive could have impulsed them to read the scripts given to them and accepted them because of the masculine roles they would be portraying.
