When the question arises about the legalization of marijuana, arguments can get heated. One side sis very adamant that weed is a gateway drug and that making it a legal substance, even if only for medical purposes, would open the floodgates for the legalization of other, more dangerous, drugs. Legalizing it medically, as they did in California, makes the substance easer for the general (non-prescribed) public to obtain, which is what the government has used countless recourses to avoid. On the other hand, the medical uses of marijuana, especially in cancer patients who are going through radiation treatment, are tried, tested, and beneficial. I believe that the substance should be legal as I have personally seen how weed has a positive effect on critically ill people, offering comfort and helping keep weight on by helping with nausea. I also believe that the money the government uses on the drug war could be better spent elsewhere. Besides, if it is legalized and taxed, it would help better this economy which, as we all are acutely aware, needs as much help as it can get.
